Chinese Broccoli (Gai Lan)

In China, gai lan or in Thailand, pak kana, in Vietnam, cai ro, this leafy green vegetable with thick, flat, glossy leaves is similar in flavor to spinach and its texture is like kale. It’s easily stir-fried with fresh-grated ginger and garlic. The robust leaves and stalks steam and boil really well, too. And they are super tasty served with oyster sauce.

According to healwithfood.org, Chinese broccoli is one of the best foods for asthma suffers to eat
due to its high concentration of folate. Gai lan, just like regular broccoli, is stuffed with carotenoids.
The American Medical Association found that increased carotenoid intake can lower risks of macular
degeneration, help prevent cataracts, and improve night vision.

Vitamin K levels are abundant in the stalks and greens of this brassica veggie. Recent studies show
that significant cardiovascular health benefits can come from eating foods high in vitamin K like gai
lan. Plus, if you’re doing Dim Sum at home, you simply must have Chinese broccoli on the table.
